Short answer

Motivation is an emotional state that fluctuates daily, so it cannot be the mechanism that gets you to train. Consistency comes from systems — fixed times, prepared equipment, a minimum viable session and a visible streak — which keep working on days when motivation is absent.

Design for the bad day

Build your routine around your worst realistic day, not your best. A plan that only survives high motivation is not a plan.

Define a minimum session — the smallest version that still counts. On hard days you do that, and the streak survives.

Remove the decisions

Every decision is a chance to opt out. Fixed time, fixed place, kit packed the night before. The fewer decisions between you and the session, the more sessions happen.

Frequently asked

What if I genuinely have no motivation?

Do the minimum version. Starting reliably generates the motivation that waiting never produces.

How long until training becomes a habit?

Typically one to three months of consistent repetition at the same time and place.
